Drawing with Light: Experimental Photography

The Program
Students will learn about analogue image making through the creation of photograms, pinhole cameras with the option to work up to building a life size Camera Obscura and mural. This program builds students’ awareness about the inner workings of early cameras and optics by exploring the photographic fundamentals such as: perspective, focus, light theory and composition.  Within natural and staged environments, students will also create ephemeral drawings, tracings and movements that capture and connect them to their local and national photographic milieu. Students will learn about specific artists and examples where early photography and painting intersect, encouraging the class to reconsider the relationship between the two mediums historically and in contemporary day. The experimental nature of this program makes photography an accessible and inclusive art form, opening up the creative potential of students. This program encourages the discovery of one’s own vision through a hands-on-learning, active looking and of course a bit of magic (or sleight of hand).

Lindsey Bond is a lens-based artist who creates collaborative photographic works and video installations that explore the starting points of culture and sidelines of community.As an Art Educator, she has a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching that is firmly rooted in the belief that art exists in everyday life and everyone has the potential to be creative. Lindsey received her BFA in Photography from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and studied Visual Communications at Edinburgh College of Art and Design, Scotland. She works with an ethic that speaks to an intentional combination of research, analogue/hands-on processes and intuition.  In addition to exhibiting nationally, Lindsey has been an art educator over the last five years. She has taught children, youth and adults at Art City, The Children’s Museum, The Art Gallery of Alberta and Artist-Run-Centers such as PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts and Harcourt House. Using antiquated photographic equipment and processes like the Camera Obscura, Lindsey teaches students to slow down image-making to engage and make visual decisions that communicate their unique perspective.
